About the Beinecke Scholarship
Supporting graduate students in the arts, humanities, and social sciences for more than 50 years.
Scholarship Origin
The Beinecke Scholarship Program was established in 1971 by the Board of Directors of The Sperry and Hutchinson Company to honor Edwin, Frederick, and Walter Beinecke.
The Beinecke Scholarship Program provides substantial scholarships for the graduate education of young people of exceptional promise.
Today, the program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated junior-year college students to pursue available opportunities and to be courageous in selecting a research- or creative-focused course of graduate study in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
Scholarship Impact
Beinecke Scholars regularly go on to become Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright, Gates-Cambridge, and Knight-Hennessy Scholars, as well as National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows, among others. They gain admission to top PhD and MFA programs in the United States and abroad, and go on to successful careers as artists, authors, academics, and more.
In a recent survey of past and current Scholars, more than 96% said the Program had a positive impact on their career trajectory. The survey also found that Beinecke Scholars in PhD programs complete their degrees a median of 3–4 years faster than the national average.
Participating Institutions
Beinecke Scholarship eligibility is limited to students who are currently enrolled as undergraduates at one of our more than 145 participating institutions. The Program is happy to receive petitions from schools wishing to join our competition, and requests are reviewed annually at our Board meeting. Schools interested in joining should contact the Program Director for more information.
