About the Beinecke African Scholarship
Developing Africa’s next generation of conservation leaders.
Scholarship Origin
In 1996, The Sperry Fund partnered with the Wildlife Conservation Society to establish the Beinecke African Scholarship Program.
This program awards financial aid to African early-career professionals to earn doctorates and other advanced degrees in conservation or wildlife ecology from universities in the United States and the United Kingdom. In addition to building knowledge and gaining prestigious credentials abroad, nascent leaders have an opportunity to expand and grow their international networks as well. A clear expectation of the program is that upon completion, newly awarded academics will return to their home countries to assume leadership positions within their communities.

“The knowledge gained throughout the graduate program equipped me with new analytical skills to better understand and address new and emerging conservation challenges. Over the years, I have been able to share this knowledge and these skills with my colleagues and government institutions through mentorship and short training programs.”
Michel Masozera2000 Beinecke African Scholar (Rwanda)
“There is no way I could have afforded a Yale education coming from Zambia. Tapping the Beinecke scholarship enables you to truly grow in what you want to do and go to any school you want, if accepted.”
Susan Tambi Matambo2002 Beinecke African Scholar (Zambia)
“It is not an exaggeration when I share that the scholarship I received from Beinecke for my graduate studies uplifted the education level of my family and entire clan by an order of magnitude.”
Carol Bogezi2011 Beinecke African Scholar (Uganda)
“The Beinecke African Scholarship made my dream of becoming a senior marine scientist a reality. Thanks to the BAS, I was able to complete my Ph.D. degree at the prestigious University of Florida, where I was supervised and mentored by top-notch manatee researchers. This academic experience has greatly advanced my skills as a marine biologist and broadened my network. My career has gotten to a superior level, and I am better equipped to address conservation challenges in my country and beyond.”
Aristide Kamla Takoukam2014 Beinecke African Scholar (Cameroon)
“The journey of getting this scholarship, from the nomination process until I completed my degree, was a transformative experience. Any dream requires persistence and faith, but to reach the end goal, I was required to develop features within myself that I never imagined: resilience, strength, and the ability to be vulnerable and receive support from others.”
Naseeba Sidat2020 Beinecke African Scholar (Mozambique)
